Black Friday is an expression used for the Friday after thanksgiving in America- this customarily starts the Christmas shopping season. Since thanksgiving usually falls on the 4th Thursday in November, black Friday usually falls on the immediate Friday between 23rd-29th November.
Black Friday is not an authorized governmental holiday but many people usually take an extended week during thanksgiving and use the Friday to go shopping. Right after thanksgiving, shops and malls are decorated for the holiday season. These shops typically open early and close late.
The phrase black Friday started in reference to the traffic in Philadelphia on that particular day way back in the 60s. Now merchants and shopkeepers use this date to mark the beginning of their sale period or holiday shopping season.
Most shops reports heavy business on black Friday but the last few years this has not been the case. While traffic and congestion have been worse on Black Friday, business sales have in fact not been great all over the country. Part of the reason has been the downturn in economy, massive unemployment and expensive goods.

Many customers often line up the night before to get at the great bargains and during the opening rush, injuries are not uncommon. The most sought out goods on black Friday are Christmas presents, including toys, electronic and jewelry.
