Ellen DeGeneres To Judge American Idol

Ellen DeGeneres will become the newest American Idol judge to replace Paula Abdul on the season premier next winter, according to a FOX press release.

Ellen DeGeneres expects to continue her talk show, stating that she will have both a ‘day job’ and a ‘night job’, stating that in “the times we’re living in we’re all doing that.”

“Hopefully, I’m the people’s point of view because I’m just like you,” DeGeneres said on her show. “I sit at home and I watch it, and I don’t have that technical … I’m not looking at it in a critical way from the producer’s mind. I’m looking at it as a person who is going to buy the music and is going to relate to that person.”

Paula Abdul announced that she would be leaving the show before the 9th season.

There has been significant coverage of the announcement, even A News Week Blog post stating that

…she (Ellen DeGeneres) won’t have any of Paula’s weaknesses. What weaknesses might those be? You know, not showing up to work on time, slurring her words, spinning in her chair and looking like she’s about to fall asleep when the contestants are performing.”

Paula Abduls removal from the show (or voluntary removal, depending on who you ask) came with much controversy, including a massive fan base revolt; many fans felt that Abdul was not given enough credit for her work on the show, and that the producers chose to look at her bad qualities instead of her good ones.
