Jim Plunkett

According to Dolphins offensive coordinator, Dan Herring , he recalls Jim Plunkett playing seven seasons wih New England and another two more with San Francisco, without having won a single season.

Making his being a number 1 pick in the 1971 draft quite odd.

Although Al Davis, (Oakland) picked him out, and from there he won Super Bowls, Herring saying. “Somebody has to have a vision for the player, and you have to put a team around him that fits him.”
Plunkett born in 1947 in San Jose, California, Played college football for Stanford University and there he won a Heisman Trophy> While also playing Professionally for Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders, San Franiciso 49ers and the New England Patriots. He has also started, and won two Super Bowls as a quarterback, leading the Raiders through victories XV and XVIII.

James W. “Jim” Plunkett was born to Mexican American parents while also having an Irish-German great grandfather paternally.

He worked his younger life as a labourer, grocery store clerk, and gas station attendant to make ends meet and to assist in the support of his blind mother and progressively blind father.

Plunkett first showed his skills in a throwing contest at the age of 14 with a throw of over 60 yards. He also competed in basketball, baseball, wrestling and track.

Tommy Prothro a UCLA coach, called him prior to entering the NFL the “best pro quarterback prospect I’ve ever seen.”

He was attractive for teams in the 1960′s due to his excellent arm strength and precision. He was drafted in 1971 by the NFL by the New England Patriot’s.

His first game was a 20-6 victory over the Oakland Raiders in the Patriot’s first regular season contest as Scahefer Stadium.

Unfortunately at the end of his career he spent his last three season’s as a back up or injured, he retired in 1986 after the season, and remains the fourth leading passer in Raider’s history.

Plunkett now does post game radio shows of Raider’s games
