Brooke Astor
Brooke Astor’s son, Anthony D Marshall was sentenced today to one to three years in prison, for siphoning millions from his mother.
Marshall who is 85, was sentenced by Justice A Kirke Bartely Jr, will have to report to prison by Jan 19.
This comes after the charge of first degree larceny, where he was on 12 counts, for giving himself a retroactive lump sum raise of $1 million for managing his mothers funds.
He was also sentenced to one year, on each of the 13 other charges he was convicted of.
Justic Bartley spoke about the crime saying. “It is a paradox to me that such abundance has led to such incredible sadness,” he said. “Your acts notwithstanding, I do believe you did love your mother. The question of what you did was settled by the jury’s verdict.”
“What would she say if she were here? Would she blanch at the spectacle?” he said about Brooke Astor.
This decision followed lengthy speeches by the prosecution and the defense. The prosecutor Joel J Seidman spoke of Marshall as doing the “Grand theft Astor” and deemed it to be “basically a six year crime spree involving a series of larcenies.” He also mentioned that Marshall showed “a sense of entitlement” after giving himself a salary increase from $45,000 to $1.36 million.
Mr Marshall did not have much to say or claim to in the case simply stating, “I have nothing to add to what my attorneys have said.”
Mrs Astor died at 105, gave away up to $200 million of her late husbands money while she was alive.
