Public relations is fundamentally the art and science of establishing relationships between an organization and its key audiences. Public relations plays a key role in helping business industries create strong relationships with customers.Public relations involves supervising and assessing public attitudes, and maintaining mutual relations and understanding between an organization and its public. The function of public relations is to improve channels of communication and to institute new ways of setting up a two-way flow of information and understanding.Public relations is effective in helping:* Corporations convey information about their products or services to potential customers* Corporations reach local government and legislators* Politicians attract votes and raise money, and craft their public image and legacy* Non-profit organizations, including schools, hospitals, social service agencies etc. boost support of their programs such as awareness programs, fund-raising programs, and to increase patronage of their servicesPublic relations in present times employs diverse techniques such as opinion polling and focus groups to evaluate public opinion, combined with a variety of high-tech techniques for distributing information on behalf of their clients, including the internet, satellite feeds, broadcast faxes, and database-driven phone banks. As public image is important to all organizations and prominent personalities the role of public relations specialist becomes pertinent in crisis situations. Public relations agencies provide important and timely transmission of information that helps save the face of the organization. In the words of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), “Public relations helps an organization and its public adopt mutually to one another.”Experienced public relations agencies have formulation press releases into which they can plug the company news, as well as a targeted list of publications for their industry. Truly good public relations agencies generally have a good working relationship with key reporters, boosting their chances of getting coverage. Some public relations agencies deal only with large, established clients, while smaller boutique public relations agencies specialize in certain areas. At present public relations as a career option exists in private companies or government institutions that actively market their product, service and facilities. Public relations training courses are widespread in educational institutions. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 122,000 public relations specialists in the United States in 1998 and approximately 485,000 advertising, marketing, and public relations managers working in all industries. Most public relations practitioners are recruited from the ranks of journalism. Public relations officers are highly trained professionals with expertise and knowledge in many areas, for example shareholder management during a crisis, the evolving role of the in-house public relations professional, account management skills for public relations, an introduction to financial public relations, an introduction to consumer public relations, an introduction to public relations software etc.

Tough economic times are precisely the times that you want to reach out to and stay in front of your target market. They are also challenging times marketing-wise because you also need to be frugal and savvy with your marketing budget. Studies have shown that companies that stop all marketing during a recession are those that fair the poorest not only during the recession, but in the long run. So, there is your dilemma, you need to promote your company, reach your market and not overly-strain your budget.

You have a number of choices to consider from advertising and direct marketing to public relations and online marketing. All forms of promotion have their upsides, but your job is to find the marketing avenue that is the most advantageous for you and your company. During rough times consumers and clients are particularly focused on companies that they can trust. Sure cost savings is a big deciding factor, but credibility becomes more important than ever.

That is where public relations becomes such an important marketing tool. Through it, you reach your target market and gain the validation and credibility of being featured in the news. Also cost-wise, PR can be much more cost effective than a concerted advertising campaign. Both require consistency. You can’t run one ad or send out one press release and expect to really benefit from either, but going the PR route offers you a number of different avenues. You can pitch the local, regional and national media. You can develop a number of different story ideas, from a product or service-based story, to a local human interest story, to a national trend story. You can present yourself as an expert in your field. You can tailor make pitches for radio, TV and print. You have the entire media world that you can pitch your story to. Then, as you garner media placement, you can feature your media hits on your website, on your blog and on various social media sites. Touch economic times are times that call for you to be both proactive and creative. So, take a deep breath, and move forward. Study the various media outlets; see what stories they run with. Now, come up with effective story ideas that meet both the media’s needs and yours. Even in the toughest of times, one well-placed story on you and your company can make all the difference.

Copyright © Anthony Mora 2009

Public Relations Q&A provided by users on Yahoo! Answers.
So I’ve been lucky enough to receive two job offers and I am very torn. I want to go into public relations/communications. Neither job is a PR job, but they are both jobs I hope can lead up to a PR job. One is a call-center position at a credit union at a large company. The other is a Sales data assistant at a large company. If there is a PR professional out there, which one looks best on a resume for someone whom wants to be a PR professional.

Call center job description:
* Handles 80 – 100 incoming customer calls each day in a professional and courteous manner
* Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
* Follows departmental policies and procedures, particularly those pertaining to customer verification
* Answer customer questions, facilitate necessary account research and resolve disputes thoroughly and accurately
*Use job knowledge and available resources to make every effort to answer the customers question during the first call
*Educates the customer about credit union products and services, cross selling them based upon customer need
* Assist management and co-workers in maintaining a productive and quality team environment

Data Sales Assistant:
Responsibilities:
• Completes a variety of data entry projects for the intermediary sales department.
• Maintains a good knowledge of Microsoft Excel and is able to quickly and efficiently sort data.
• Enters contacts and/or notes from Excel lists into the sales database.
• Creates, generates and saves customized searches within the sales database for internal use.
• Creates and edits contact groups within the database.
• Coordinates large data clean-up and data merging projects in order to keep the database populated with current information.
• Performs routine data integrity checks to ensure data is accurate.
• Exports customized lists from Calamos affiliated contact databases.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

Sorry this is so long! I’m just hoping to get some input from someone who knows something about PR/Publicity or what would look better on a resume. I’m not considering location/salary/etc. at this time, just what would be best for my future.

Thanks so much!

Bad news can hit at any hour of the day or night. Crisis situations don’t observe holidays and can occur at the most inopportune times (right before a long-planned vacation is always a possibility).

Plants explode, products are recalled, executives are caught with mistresses, another company announces its intention to acquire your company right after the Labor Day weekend . . . these are just a few situations that can emerge when least expected. Throughout the course of virtually every business there will most likely be at least one situation where the term “crisis management” comes into play. Just ask any politician or the management of any major company. For small and mid-size companies, a small fire can quickly turn into a raging inferno.

How a company’s public relations officials and their advisors, including Makovsky + Company, a public relations firm New York, handle a crisis situation can help define that company as well as preserve its standing and reputation.

It has been said that half of what is needed to survive a crisis can be done well in advance. And your public relations firm New York can help. We offer some tips:

* Limit the number of messengers — It is critical that your company or client get your side of the story out in an effective and rapid fashion. One member of your public relations team — the most senior and seasoned — should handle all inquiries regarding a crisis situation. This avoids the dissemination of erroneous and incomplete information. Executives who normally deal with the media should defer all questions to the public relations contact. Interviews with the media can and should be prioritized.

* Stay on message — Keep your message consistent at all times. State the facts clearly and in the simplest terms possible. Rehearse interviews with your outside advisors, particularly a public relations firm New York, one of the world’s key media centers.

* Remember: employees are brand managers — In a crisis situation, it’s essential that you tell your employees what’s going on. It is best to do this verbally and not in writing, because e-mail and memos have a way of getting leaked and can be posted in chat rooms and blog sites.

* Clients and customers need to be in the loop — Another important constituency are your company’s customers and clients. It’s important that you keep them informed to maintain their business. Work with executives in sales, marketing, as well as those in customer-facing roles to come up with a plan to tell your story to them.

* Good corporate disclosure counts — Obviously, there are SEC rules and regulations to contend with if you are a public company. Make sure these disclosure rules are being followed or else a bigger problem can occur. Check with your public relations firm New York or outside investor relations counsel to insure your company’s disclosure requirements have been satisfied.

As a corporate communications professional, there is a good possibility that you will be your company’s first line of defense. Chances are that when a crisis hits, you will be among the first to know, if not the first. You will also be front and center as the voice and face of the company. Being well-prepared for any and all contingencies is a must and will speed the reputation recovery process.

There are still inexpensive ways to get the word out about your business. You just have to have the patience and creativity to find them!
Here are a few techniques and tips that will help you to get started with a public relations campaign:
- Develop a simple PR plan. You don’t need a complex plan, but by taking the time to map out a few basics you can help ensure the success of your PR efforts. Start by identifying what you want to accomplish for your business, how you want to be seen by your target audience and what important facts you want to convey about your business. Then take it a step further and map out a strategy for achieving your objectives. This should include a list of tactics you will use such as press releases, articles, public speaking, etc. Starting with this simple task can make it easier to stay focused on the type of PR that will help you achieve your business goals.
- Tell them how to contact you. Believe it or not, one of the most commonly forgotten pieces of information in any press release is the contact information. How will people find you if you don’t tell them? Always include a clear statement at the end of every release that says exactly how you can be reached. Most experts recommend including a contact name, website address, email address and phone number if possible.
- Run a fun contest. Contests themselves are not all that exciting. But if you take it to a new level and run a “silliest thing” or “dumbest mistake” contest with your customers you may be amazed at the exposure it brings you. For instance, if you’re a shoe repair shop, ask your customers to submit pictures of their silliest pair of shoes. If you’re a sporting goods retailer ask your customers for the dumbest mistakes they’ve ever made while camping. These are great human-interest stories that the press will love. And you shouldn’t have any shortage of material since people generally love to share their stories and appear in the news!
- Stick with it. When it comes to using PR successfully, the most important word for you to remember is persistence. If you take the time to develop a plan and then work continuously toward carrying out that plan, you will see results for your efforts. It won’t happen overnight, but your patience and perseverance will be rewarded.
- Create a top 10 list. Take a tip from David Letterman and create a top ten list about something in your business. If you’re a beautician, write an article titled, “Top Ten Most Popular Hairstyles for Women.” People love these – especially if you include humor. The community will see that you enjoy your business and want to entertain your customers.
Another tip is that numbers attract the eye more than words. So even if it’s not the number 10, start off your headlines with numbers whenever you possibly can.
The important role that public relations can play in promoting your business should never be underestimated. Using PR you can reach out to many potential customers and build a trust with them that advertising alone cannot provide. Give PR a try and see how it works for you!

I just started volunteering for an organization that groups 26 local non-profits and is dedicated to promoting those 26 members among employees with operations in our city.

What would be the main barriers or concerns that HR managers or managers would have when I go and talk to them?

In negotiation something that the other party appreciates is called a currency, I am thinking of promotion and good publicity for those companies that help us, what do you think? is there any other currency that you can think of?

Also any particular industry or business type that would be more welcoming than the rest?

Any other tip?

Thanks a lot, I am really excited about this and really want to do a good job =D
