Ultradns
It seems that a DDOS (distributed denial of service) attack was the cause of the outrage with the UltraDNS service, says a customer support representative for NeuStar the company the provides the service.
The problem caused many problems for Christmas shopping surfers, especially for Amazon.com.
It has made loading slow, and also has resulted in some people having their pending transactions fail, on completion. Christmas is probably the worse time of year for the sites to be happy problems.
Twitter was used by many to vent their outrage, such as by users of Amazon’s S3 service for Web hosting as well as others from Salesforce.com and Walmart.com, who were reporting problems there.
Later there were also problems being reported with Expedia.com, leading to the speculation that the problem might of been a lot bigger than first expected.
The general manger and program director, Rusty Hodge, at Internet Radio station SomaFM, tweeted that UltraDNS simply went down, which took down customers to Amazon’s S3 and EC2 services along with Amazon.
Jeff Barr a lead Web service evangelist at Amazon.com alao retweeted Hodge’s tweet without comment.
