Professor Walter Williams

Walter Williams, a Professor of Economics at George Mason University, released a syndicated article (although we’re not sure anyone actually published it), titled “Washington’s Lies,” in which he attempts to case 60 years of entitlement programs as frauds.  Mr. Williams is known for his somewhat frantic writings on a number of topics, and unfortunately, we believe the only reason his article is getting any attention is because he is an African American academic criticizing an African American President.

In fact, Williams has made the rounds of various media outlets, all of which have allowed him to continue his fear mongering, and none of which has required him to submit any kind of backup for his assertions.

We certainly acknowledge the Professor’s credentials, however, his article provides absolutely no back up for his somewhat frantic assertions, something he would certainly not tolerate from his own students.  We would caution him about writing a “sky is falling” article and not providing any sort of citations whatsoever.

Quite simply, this article was just another example of how the Healthcare debate has been sidetracked by senseless name calling.  It is interesting that the Professor calls Obama a liar – because the reason this debate has gotten so out of control is the baseless rumors being spread by the far right in the hopes of whipping their under informed fans into a frenzy.

The last time the President got into a situation with a prominent African-American scholar, it did not turn out so well, so we would recommend something like “while I take issue with Professor Williams’ argument, I respect him and his expertise in the field of Economics.”  This should be enough to turn the spotlight away.
