World Kindness Day, Nov 13, 2009
Today may be Friday the 13th and associated with a lot of superstitious beliefs but it is also World kindness Day. The goal of World Kindness day is to look back, way back beyond any geographical barriers, beyond colors of skin, language, religion and think how lucky we are to live in this world.
Irrespective of where we live, we are all in this together. In the past 50 years much progress has been made. We have seen further, flown higher, been to the moon and back; and cyberspace has opened up a gateway of information which is far more reaching that all the libraries combined.
We have all contributed to the well being of the earth and we must strive to make it better so that our children will have a more prosperous and long life.
To make for peaceful existence, we have to set asides our biases and become more tolerant, more broad minded and learn to forgive. Each one of us has distorted beliefs about other cultures and religions. While some may be true it is only when we get to know one another, that we realize that we are all alike in many ways.
Many of us have suffered at injustice of others and are bitter. However, if we are to move ahead, we have to let go of these transgressions and leave it to the almighty for the final penalty.
World kindness day is about forgiving, making a positive impact on this earth, healing wounds of the past and making the earth a better place to live for everyone. We should persist to correct wrongs of the past.
Calvin Coolidge once said about persistence, “Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education alone will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”
Take a minute and be kind to someone today.
