Grace Bumbry
Grace Bumbry, or “Black Venus” as she is nicknamed, was introduced by superstar Aretha Franklin at the Kennedy Center Honors Ceremony, which happened on the 6th of December but was shown tonight on CBS.
Bumbry, was introduced by Franklin, who told a story of a legendary performance “The Dance of the Seven Veils” which Bumbry ended in nothing but “perfume and jewels.” This snippet of the 72 year old’s life appearing in her naked glory at Convent Garden prompted a “No you didn’t girlfriend,” from the Queen of Soul.
The night also honored Mel Brooks, Robert De Niro, Dave Brubeck a jazz musician, and Bruce Springsteen.
Sharon Stone, Ben Stiller and Hervey Keitel paid tribute to De Niro, after an introduction by Meryl Streep.
The amazing Dave Brubeck, introduced by Herbie Hancock, Hancock claiming Brubeck being the reason he “doesn’t have a day job.” Brubeck best known for The Dave Brubeck Quartet and the 1959 album “Time Out” featuring the hit “Take Five.” It being one of the most recognized popular jazz pieces. The event also was on the Jazz legends birthday, where he also got the gift of song “happy Birthday” from his four sons.
Meanwhile Mel Brooks, who was introduced by Comedian Carl Reiner, while Martin Short, Richard Kind, Matthew Broderick, Harry Connick Jr, Frank Langella, and the members of The Producers musical cast sang a medley of hits, from Brooks’ movies like High Anxiety, Blazing Saddles, The Twelve Chairs and Robin Hood-Men in Tights.
The Daily Shows Jon Stewart introduced Rock and Roll great Bruce Springsteen,
Springsteen was thanked by Vietnam Veteran author Ron Kovic for his work, while John Mellencamp did his own version of “Born in the USA,” in tribute, while Ben Harper and Jennifer Nettles performed “I’m on Fire.” They were also joined by performances by Melissa Etheridge, Eddie Vedder, and Sting all performing the greats hits, with Stings performance of “The Rising,” with a gospel choir got the whole building on it’s feet and singing.
